Meet Jamie Pickens | Founder of In Between the Detail

I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and my interior design studio, In Between the Detail.

I’m Jamie Pickens, founder and principal designer of the Chicago based studio focused on creating layered, refined spaces that feel personal, intentional, and lived in. My work blends vintage and modern influences with natural materials, thoughtful textures, and timeless details to create homes with warmth, character, and longevity.

A Look Inside the Studio

2026 has already been an exciting year for the studio. We’ve been wrapping up a boutique clothing store set to open this June, large scale residential renovations in West Loop and Kildeer, a Lincoln Park furnishing project, styling projects in Logan Square, and a number of 1:1 design consultations for homeowners across Chicago and beyond.

At In Between the Detail, we offer full service residential and commercial interior design, furnishing and styling, renovation support, space planning, furniture sourcing, material and finish selections, and design consultations for projects throughout Chicago and across the United States.

What Does an Interior Designer Actually Do?

One of the questions I get asked most often is what an interior designer actually does. For many homeowners, especially first time homeowners, the process can feel overwhelming and difficult to navigate. Beyond creating beautiful spaces, interior design is about creating thoughtful, functional, and cohesive homes tailored to each client’s lifestyle.

My role is to guide clients through the renovation or furnishing process, streamline decision making, coordinate the countless moving pieces behind the scenes, and help avoid costly mistakes through years of industry experience. I work closely with clients to create homes that not only look elevated and cohesive, but also feel deeply personal and reflective of how they live.

The Interior Design Process

Every project is tailored to the client’s needs, but the design process typically begins with an introductory call and consultation to better understand the client’s lifestyle, goals, timeline, and vision for the space.

From there, projects move into concept development, space planning, sourcing, design development, and coordination with contractors and vendors throughout the process. Whether it’s a furnishing project or a large scale renovation, I always strive to understand how clients want their home to feel, not just how they want it to look.

Projects range from single room furnishing and styling to full home renovations and multi room design projects. Some clients are looking for full service project management, while others simply need help identifying what feels “off” in a space or pulling together a cohesive direction.

Design Consultations vs. Full Service Design

I also offer design consultations, which are a great option for clients who need guidance on a specific room, furniture layout, sourcing, or overall design direction. This tends to be the most approachable offering for clients interested in working with a designer for the first time.

For clients looking for more in depth support, multiple revisions, renovation guidance, procurement management, or ongoing coordination throughout the project, full service design is typically the better fit.

Looking Ahead

I’m excited to continue growing the studio, connecting with new clients and industry partners, and sharing more of the behind the scenes design process here.
